6 Types of Signage
Prohibition Signs – These are signs to prevent certain actions. The most common prohibition sign is a red round circle with a line through it over top of an activity that should not be done. Such as ‘No Smoking’ signs, ‘No U-turn’ or ‘No entry’. All of which are to keep people safe and to keep a construction zone functioning as it’s intended.
Mandatory Signs – A mandatory sign is used to indicate what a person should be doing. These are the opposite of prohibition signs and are usually blue. The most common use for a mandatory sign is regarding protective clothing. You will often see signs that require workers to have eye protection, high visibility clothing, or head protection.
Warning Road Signs – The majority of road warning signs for construction are a yellow diamond with black symbol or lettering. These signs warn drivers or pedestrians about hazards that are ahead such as a dead end, pedestrian crossing, or other unexpected conditions.
Danger Signs – Danger signs indicate that the conditions are not safe and people should either avoid the area or proceed with caution. These rectangular signs have a white background, black lettering and ‘Danger’ in red. They can say things such as, “Construction Area – Authorized Personnel Only”.
Caution Signs – A caution sign warns about hazards and areas that could cause minor/moderate injuries. Caution signs are rectangular signs that can be yellow or white and often have black lettering. The text on the sign is usually very similar to danger signs.
Regulatory Signs – Regulatory signs are supposed to inform readers of laws or regulations around a construction site, road, or any other work site. Regulatory signs are the most common type of sign in a construction area and should be installed in the exact area where the regulation applies. Examples of regulatory signs include: speed limit, railroad signs, start and end of construction zones, road signs including stop signs and winding road signs, and more.
Does your Construction Site have the Required Signs?
Every construction site should have all hazards properly marked as well as danger signs, caution signs, warning signs and fire safety signs. A construction site can be an unsafe spot so properly identifying hazards, ensuring people know what is required and prohibited and placing enough signs so that important things aren’t missed is crucial for work zone safety.
Considerations for Signs
Materials and signs for different projects:
Roll up signs or foldable signs are highly visible signs mainly used for traffic control. They are made from lightweight fiberglass so that they can be transported between sites easily. These signs are usually displayed on a stand with a bracket.
Message Boards and Arrow Boards are electronic message boards used in traffic safety to give updates on conditions that are abnormal or change. Arrowboards tell drivers to move in one direction or another while variable message boards can display a variety of custom messages.
